Frequently Asked Questions

I'm out of shape. Will Tang Soo Do be difficult for me?

You will never be asked to "keep up" with what others are doing. Students are closely    monitored and brought along at a rate consistent with their physical and technical skill    levels. It's never a competition.

Will training worsen my back, knee or other physical condition?

It has been shown in both medical publications and from students personal experiences that training with proper supervision and instruction actually improves many physical conditions over time, while promoting an increase in general well-being. Of course, your doctor should always be consulted prior to embarking on any new exercise program.

Will training help me lose weight?

Most definitely. In addition to the cardio and muscle strengthening benefits, Tang Soo Do's unique approach to using the hip to generate power means that techniques are practiced within a greater range of motion, thereby adding to the total body exercise and weight loss.

Am I too old to begin the martial arts?

Never. There are too many cases that argue against that idea. Read the following articles that are posted on my Tang Soo Do World website.

"Tang Soo Do After 40?"
"Black Belt at 64 Years Old"

Will martial arts training make my child more violent?

Our structured curriculum and environment stresses respect and self-discipline and therefore improves students self-image and outward behavior towards others.

Our school instituted a program with the Seminole County Sheriff's Department to help at-risk kids through martial arts training. Click here to read the October 2007 article that appeared in The Sanford Herald.

We are also a member of the Sidekick Foundation, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to assist at-risk kids through the martial arts.

How many times a week should I train?

That depends on your personal goals and schedule. A minimum of two classes per week (twenty four classes within a three month period) is required for rank testing. If rank is not of great importance, then any time you can train will be beneficial for you. However, only one day per week or less is not practical to developing defensive skills unless you can practice considerably on your off time.

Can I try a class for free?

Absolutely. Keep in mind that one class will only expose you to a small sampling of the material we cover over the long term. The best approach is to commit to at least one month. Since there are no contracts, you are not obligated beyond that. That way you get the full effect and can make a more informed decision.

How do I start?

You can give me a call or simply stop by the school about 15 minutes before class time. That way we have a few moments to get to know each other. You can join us that same evening.

What do I wear?

Any loose fitting workout clothes will be fine. Long pants are preferred, but shorts are OK.
We train without shoes or socks. When you are ready to commit to training, you will be required to purchase a uniform. The cost is $35.00.
